Witcham Cricket Club

It's a tie July 2005

Witcham and St Ives II shared a thrilling 2NB tie after both sides scored 206.

Michael Hook (72) and Stuart Hare (53) were largely responsible for Witcham's 206 for 9 after Richard Wells had taken 3 for 34. Mark Grantham scored 43 not out to take St Ives ever closer but he could not quite organise the eight that were needed to win off the last over and his side finished at 206 for 8.

Short Work

Witcham made short work of Abbots Ripton in Division 2NB, bowling out the opposition for 95 (Tim Hartley 51, Lloyd Few 4 for 14, Nigel Phillips 3 for 32) to earn a 91-runs victory after scoring 186 for 8 (Nigel Howlett 46, Nigel Pate 37).

A Double

Witcham completed a weekend double when following a five-run 2NB victory at Needingworth by inflicting Doddington with their first defeat of the season to win Sunday's Junior Cup tie by 14 runs.

Lloyd Few (38) and Thomas Heaps (28 not out) rescued their side from 85 for 8 to post a challenging 136 for 9 on a difficult, damp Needingworth pitch and, although Ian Armstrong hit 62 in reply, tight bowling restricted the home side to 131 for 7.

The holders are intent on not letting their Junior Cup crown go without a fight as Doddington discovered when their opponents posted 213 for 4, a total built on a first-wicket partnership of 147 between Michael Hook (94) and Nigel Pate (41), then supported by Chris Houghton (35).

Weekend double in 2005    Cambridge Evening News

Witcham completed a weekend double when following a 2NB victory over Ely & Haddenham II with a 12-run win over Littleport in the defence of their Junior Cup title.

Mark Higginson (58) and Phil Vincent (45 not out) put on 95 for Ely's sixth wicket but Ian Sabberton (3 for 33) kept things in check to restrict them to 205 for 7.

Nigel Howlett (66), Michael Hook (55) and the small matter of 47 extras helped Witcham to a three-wicket win.

Hook made 32 as Witcham scored 148 in the cup (Andrew South 4 for 34, James South 4 for 23) and then Nigel Phillips (3 for 27), Chris Houghton (3 for 33) and Stuart Hare (3 for 14) combined to dismiss Littleport for 136 (Andrew South 33).

Sutton Lose To Witcham

Sutton II did no better when losing to Witcham by nine wickets in 2NB. John Megison scored 40 not out as his side struggled to 110 for 8 and that was not enough to challenge Witcham as Michael Hook (69 not out) and Nigel Pate (31) batted them to victory.

Division 2NB  2005  Cambridge Evening News

Mark Thompson made Witcham pay for dropping him in the covers when he steered Bar Hill to victory in Division 2NB. The hosts made 125, Ian Housdon leading the way with a hard-hitting 36 as Phil Walmsley and Martin Cullum picked up three wickets apiece. Thompson's unbeaten 36 steadied the visitors, who reached their target with four wickets in hand and eight balls to spare.

Kirkland Cup 2005 (From the Ely Standard)

SUTTON and Little Downham recorded wins in the first round of matches in the historic Kirkland Cup this week.

Sutton overwhelmed defending champions Witcham in their fixture with Vincent brothers Mike and Andrew to the fore.

Andrew Vincent smashed an unbeaten 128 on Monday night, hitting the Witcham attack to all parts of the ground, while his older brother held things together with 80.

Witcham's cause was not helped by an injury to young tyro Ian Housden, who injured his back after just one over and was unable to bowl for the rest of the match.

Sutton totalled 252-4 off their allotted 40 overs and Witcham could only reach 131 on Tuesday, Chris Houghton hitting 35 and Nigel Howlett 34. John Few took 4-33 and Owen Rutterford 4-39.

Peter Baker's 80 was the highlight of the other match, as Little Downham comprehensively defeated Littleport.

The Downham man helped his side reach 250-3, and in reply, 'Port could only make 110.

With only six teams involved, the competition is being played in a round-robin format this year as opposed to the straight knock-out of previous years.

Sutton, Witcham and Wilburton comprise one group while Ely/Haddenham, Littleport and Little Downham make up the other.

The winners of the two groups will play in the final at Littleport Leisure Centre on July 4 and 5. In the event of each team in the two groups winning one match, finalists will be decided on net run rate.

2005 Pre-season net practice will be held at Littleport Leisure Centre on the following evenings between 7.00 and 8.30:

Sunday 10 April

Sunday 24 April

Sunday 1 May

Nigel's knock lifts the cup (From the Ely Standard)

08 Jul 2004 00:00

WITCHAM won the Kirkland Cup after an excellent unbeaten 84 from Nigel Pate helped give his side control of the game against Sutton.

Pate's knock, coming at the top of the order and carrying his bat through the innings, gave him the man of the match award and helped Witcham gain a decisive advantage in what was a close-fought game.

Opener Pate's innings was very much the outstanding effort with the bat, and no other batsman made any real impression. He did receive support from Nigel Phillips (13) Nigel Howlett, who hit 20, and Jamie Lawrence, with 12, in a Witcham total of 165-7.

Pick of the bowlers for Sutton was Andy Rutterford, who took two wickets for 27 off six overs.

Sutton started their run-chase well, with openers Rutterford and Mike Vincent both getting 20, but Witcham's attack soon got back into the game.

Phillips took 3-26 and Ian Saberton 3-48 to turn the game Witcham's way again. Sutton were dismissed for 147, despite good efforts further down the order from Glen Campbell, with 22, and John Few, with 26.

Pate said afterwards: "It's funny really because our league form has been patchy but we haven't lost a cup game yet this season.

NEWS 26 June From the Ely Standard

Witcham bowl into cup semi-finals

WITCHAM progressed to the semi-finals of the Kirkland Cup after a stunning bowling performance against Wilburton.

Set 152 to win, Wilburton would have fancied their chances but some outstanding bowling from the three-pronged attack of Ian Housden, Nigel Howlett and Nigel Phillips reduced Wilburton to 28-7 at one stage.

Although they recovered somewhat, they were still skittled out for 88 after Witcham took some excellent catches allied to top class fielding.

Ian Jacobs was the only Wilburton batsman to occupy the crease for any length of time, making 46. Wickets went to Housden (3-13), Howlett (4-51) and Phillips (2-19).

Earlier in the match, Nigel Lawrence's powerful 61 had given Witcham a fighting chance of success. He put on 86 for the first wicket with Nigel Pate (28) but wickets tumbled regularly from that point.

Witcham will face Chatteris in the semi-final, after Ely/Haddenham failed to raise a side to face the Fen outfit.

Pate said: "It was a great bowling performance and we fielded really well too."

In other action, last year's winners Doddington defeated Littleport. Set 228 to win, Andy South made 102 out of 172 as 'Port finished well short of their target.

The semi-finals will be played at Littleport Leisure Centre at a date to be announced.
